Mark, who has recently been elected as Chairman of Chelmer Valley Woodturners, has demonstrated here before and shown his particular skill in making lace bobbins. To-day he demonstrated how to produce thin walled turning as shown on the photos.
He made 2 different flower like pieces, one from a branch of Greengage and a second from Willow. Both turned from wet.
The blanks were initially mounted between centres fitted in the pith of the wood and a spigot turned. The blanks were then mounted in a chuck and the turning started at the flower head which was finished before the stem was turned.
The flower heads were turned down to a couple of mm thick using a light beam to check thickness. Stems were slowly and carefully turned in stages from the head to the foot. And finally a captured ring was added using a skew.
