The main item he made to-day was a hollow box with a lid as shown on the photo, Fig 6 at the bottom of the page. He started with the Cedar log between centres, Fig 1, and divided the length into 6 section, Fig 2, with 2 sections for the lid and 3 for the box. Then started to shape the the box, Fig 3, before parting.
After having finished the shaping of the lid and the box he paid particular attention to the finish, both inside and outside using negative rake scrapers, particularly difficult inside the bottom of the box, Fig 5. He used sanding sealer before finally finishing with scrapers. Which left an excellent finish.
Les has demonstrated in Sandon may times (at least 19 times!) over the years going back to 2005. In fact one of the projects he did 20 years ago was a thin walled dish very like the one he made to-day, 20 years later. As he showed to-day he hasn’t lost his touch and very quickly converted a green Log in silver birch, fig 7, to the dish shown on the photo, Fig 9. As before he used a light shining through the wood to maintain an even thickness, Fig 8.
