This is the first time Jason, who has come all the way from Devon, has visited our club and judging by to-day’s demo it is likely that we shall invite him back in the future. To-day Jason showed us how to make a Pagoda box. In order to make sure the corners stayed sharp he cut the blank on a band saw rather than using a parting tool.

Jason was thorough and explained each step of the process, including his choice of tools and how he ‘wraps his hand around the tool rest’ to get straight cuts.

He explained the need to take time to ensure the lid fits the body with a nice fit that’s not too lose and the importance of finishing the bottom, as this is where Wood turners look first.  He also emphasized the importance of using sharp tools.

Once finished, Jason used a polishing mop to add carnuba wax to produce a shiny finish.
